Planning Tours from Tangier: Advice from Our Team

Why start in Tangier

Tangier is Morocco’s front door from Europe. Ferries cross from Tarifa in about an hour, and the Al Boraq high-speed train links Tangier with Rabat and Casablanca. It is also the natural start for the north: Chefchaouen is about two and a half hours away, and the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts are on your doorstep. Give the city half a day for the kasbah, the old medina and a mint tea overlooking the Strait.

Typical routes from Tangier

Most of our tours run Tangier, Tetouan or Asilah, Chefchaouen and Fes, then the Sahara at Merzouga and on to Marrakech. Shorter loops cover the north and Fes in about a week. Travelers crossing from Spain for a few days often do Tangier, Chefchaouen and Fes, then head back to the ferry.

How many days you need

With three or four days you can see Tangier, Chefchaouen and Fes. Add the desert and you need eight days or more, because Fes to Merzouga alone is a long day’s drive. Ten to fourteen days covers the north, the Sahara and Marrakech comfortably.

If your ferry lands late in the afternoon, spend the first night in Tangier rather than driving on in the dark. Our Chefchaouen guide explains whether a day trip or an overnight stay suits you better.

Arriving by air or ferry

Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) is about 15 km from the center, 20 to 25 minutes by car. Ferries from Tarifa dock at Tangier Ville port, right in town. Ferries from Algeciras and other Spanish ports use Tanger Med, about 45 km east of the city. Your driver meets you after passport control with a name sign, so send us your ferry booking and we’ll be at the right port.

Best season

The north is greener and cooler than the south. April to June and September to October are the best months. Winters are mild but rainy. In July and August the ports get very busy as Moroccans living in Europe come home for the summer, so allow extra time at Tanger Med and book ferries early.
