How to Spend 5 Days in Morocco
With five days you can do the desert properly: two nights around Merzouga, a full day in the dunes, and a drive back that is split in two instead of squeezed into one. That is what we suggest to most people who come to us with five days and the Sahara on their list.
The other option is to skip the long roads and settle into one region. Marrakech pairs well with the High Atlas and Essaouira. In the north, Tangier, Chefchaouen and Fes fit neatly into five days. What does not work well is Marrakech, the Sahara and Fes with time to enjoy both cities. That needs a week.

01
5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS
Marrakech & the Sahara, Without the Rush
Two nights at Merzouga and a night in Ouarzazate on the way back, so no day is longer than it needs to be.
- Marrakech → Marrakech
- 2 nights in Merzouga
- Private tour · ready-made version available
Day 3 is the one people talk about afterwards: a whole day around Merzouga by 4×4, with no clock to watch. The way back goes through Rissani and the quiet desert roads past Alnif and Nkob, not the same road you came in on.
Suggested 5-day plan
- Day 1: Marrakech over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then on to the Dades Valley.
- Day 2: Todra Gorge in the morning, Merzouga in the afternoon. Camel ride into the dunes for sunset and a night in camp.
- Day 3: A private 4×4 day around Erg Chebbi: Gnawa music in Khamlia, the black stone plains, nomad tents, then a second night in Merzouga.
- Day 4: Merzouga to Ouarzazate via Rissani, Alnif and Nkob.
- Day 5: Back across the High Atlas to Marrakech, about four hours with photo stops.
02
5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS
Casablanca, Marrakech & the Atlas
For travelers landing in Casablanca who want Marrakech and a taste of the mountains, with no long drives.
- Casablanca → Marrakech
- 1 night in an Agafay desert camp
- Private tour · ready-made version available
Casablanca to Marrakech is about three hours on the motorway. Agafay is stony desert rather than sand dunes, but it is less than an hour from Marrakech and the view of the Atlas at sunset is worth the night.
Suggested 5-day plan
- Day 1: Arrive in Casablanca and visit the Hassan II Mosque, one of the few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims can enter, on a guided tour.
- Day 2: Drive to Marrakech and settle into your riad.
- Day 3: A guided day in Marrakech with a licensed local guide.
- Day 4: Morning in the High Atlas around Imlil, then a camp in the Agafay desert for sunset and dinner.
- Day 5: Sunrise over Agafay, then your transfer to Marrakech airport.
03
5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS
Fes, the Sahara & Marrakech
Start with Fes, cross the desert and finish in Marrakech. The best one-way route for five days.
- Fes → Marrakech
- 2 nights in Merzouga
- Private tour · tailor-made
This is our 4-day Sahara tour from Fes to Marrakech with a day in Fes added at the start. There is no guided day in Marrakech at the end, so it suits travelers who are staying on in Marrakech after the tour.
Suggested 5-day plan
- Day 1: Arrive in Fes and spend the afternoon in the medina with a licensed guide.
- Day 2: Fes to Merzouga through Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz Valley, about seven to eight hours with stops. Camel ride to camp.
- Day 3: A free day around the dunes and Khamlia, and a second night in Merzouga.
- Day 4: Merzouga to the Dades Valley via Todra Gorge.
- Day 5: Dades to Marrakech via Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou and the Tizi n’Tichka pass.
04
5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS
Tangier, Chefchaouen & Fes
Northern Morocco in five days. A good fit if you arrive by ferry from Spain or fly into Tangier.
- Tangier → Fes
- No Sahara · short drives
- Private tour · tailor-made
Day 3 is the busy one, with the Roman city of Volubilis and the old imperial city of Meknes on the way to Fes. Fes gets its own full day with a guide.
Suggested 5-day plan
- Day 1: Tangier: the Kasbah, the medina, mint tea at Café Hafa, and Cap Spartel where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
- Day 2: Drive to Chefchaouen, about two and a half hours. Afternoon in the blue medina and sunset from the Spanish Mosque.
- Day 3: Chefchaouen to Fes, stopping at Volubilis and Meknes.
- Day 4: Guided day in Fes el-Bali: the tanneries, the madrasas and the craft souks.
- Day 5: A free morning in Fes, then your flight or train.
05
5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS
Marrakech, the High Atlas & Essaouira
The slow option: three bases, short drives and a night in the mountains.
- Marrakech → Marrakech
- 1 night in the High Atlas, 1 in Essaouira
- Private tour · tailor-made
Good for families and anyone who has already done a desert trip. The longest day is about four hours in the car, from the mountains to the coast.
Suggested 5-day plan
- Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech. Evening on Jemaa el-Fna.
- Day 2: Guided day in the medina with a licensed local guide.
- Day 3: Drive to Imlil, about 75 minutes. Walk to the Berber villages below Toubkal and sleep in a mountain guesthouse.
- Day 4: Down to Essaouira, about four hours with a stop at an argan cooperative. Sunset on the ramparts.
- Day 5: Morning at the fishing port, then back to Marrakech, about two and a half hours.

Local tip
Two nights in the desert is the sweet spot
With one night in the Sahara you arrive at sunset and leave after sunrise. With two, you get a slow morning, a whole day around the dunes and a second sunset without watching the clock. On a 5-day trip, that is the change we recommend most.
Before you go, read our Merzouga travel guide for the drive, the camps, the seasons and what to pack.

Questions
5-Day Morocco Itinerary FAQs
Still unsure which route suits you? Our local team replies quickly, usually within a few hours.
Can I see Marrakech, Fes and the Sahara in 5 days?
You can travel through all three, but you will not really see Marrakech and Fes. Fes to Merzouga is a long day and Merzouga to Marrakech is longer, so most of your time goes to the road and the desert. If both cities matter to you, look at our 7-day Morocco itineraries.
Is 5 days in Morocco enough?
For one region, yes. Five days covers the Sahara at a comfortable pace, or Marrakech with the mountains and the coast, or the north from Tangier to Fes. It is not enough for a full loop of the country.
Is it worth spending two nights in the desert?
We think so. The second night gives you a full day around Merzouga and splits the long drive back, which makes the whole trip calmer.
What is the best 5-day itinerary without the desert?
Marrakech, the High Atlas and Essaouira if you are flying into Marrakech. Tangier, Chefchaouen and Fes if you are coming from Spain or flying into the north. Neither has a drive much longer than four hours.
When is the best time for a 5-day trip?
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the most comfortable for both the cities and the Sahara. Winter days are sunny, but desert nights drop close to freezing. Summer is very hot in Marrakech and in the desert. Our guide to the best time to visit Morocco goes season by season.
How much does a 5-day private tour cost?
Our ready-made 5-day private tours start from €1,270 per adult, as shown on each tour page. The final price depends on your dates, number of travelers, room setup and accommodation level. Send us your plans for a written quote. Travelers from the USA can ask for a quote in US dollars.
Marrakech combines guided city visits with time for the souks and your riad.
