Private Morocco itineraries

Morocco Itinerary 3 Days

Three days in Morocco, built around one region. These are five private routes we drive all the time, with honest driving times.

Planning advice

How to Spend 3 Days in Morocco

Three days is short, so pick one thing and do it well. For most people that means the Sahara: a camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, a night in a desert camp and sunrise from the top of a dune. The catch is the road. Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech and about 460 km from Fes, so every 3-day desert trip has two long driving days.

If you would rather spend more time out of the car, stay close to one city. From Marrakech, the High Atlas village of Imlil is about 75 minutes away and Essaouira about two and a half hours. From Fes, Chefchaouen is three and a half to four hours through the Rif foothills.

3-Day Private Merzouga Desert Tour from Marrakech route map: overnight stops in Dades Valley (1 night), Merzouga (1 night)

01

3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS

Marrakech to the Sahara and Back

The classic short desert trip: two days down to the dunes, one long day back.

This route crosses the High Atlas twice, so Day 3 is long: plan on nine to ten hours on the road with stops. If you can add one day, the 4-day Sahara tour from Marrakech gives you a full day in Merzouga.

Suggested 3-day plan

  1. Day 1: Leave Marrakech in the morning and cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Visit the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, then continue past Ouarzazate to the Dades Valley for the night.
  2. Day 2: Walk into Todra Gorge, then drive on to Merzouga, about five hours with stops. Ride a camel into the dunes for sunset and sleep in a desert camp.
  3. Day 3: Sunrise on the dunes and breakfast in camp, then the long drive back to Marrakech via Ouarzazate and the High Atlas.

02

3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS

Marrakech to Fes Through the Sahara

A one-way crossing, so you never drive the same road twice. It works just as well from Fes to Marrakech.

Finishing in Fes saves you the long drive back over the Atlas, and the last day north through the Ziz Valley is one of the prettiest roads in Morocco. Starting in Fes instead? Our 3-day tour from Fes to Marrakech runs the same route the other way.

Suggested 3-day plan

  1. Day 1: Marrakech over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Ait Ben Haddou, then on to the Dades Valley.
  2. Day 2: Todra Gorge in the morning, Merzouga in the afternoon. Camel ride to camp for sunset.
  3. Day 3: Sunrise, then north through Erfoud, the Ziz Valley palm groves, Midelt and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas to Fes. Allow about eight hours with stops.

03

3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS

Fes to Merzouga and Back

Two nights in the desert from Fes, with a whole day around Merzouga instead of a rushed overnight.

Fes is closer to the Sahara than Marrakech, which is why this is the only 3-day route with a free day in the desert. The drive is about seven to eight hours each way with stops.

Suggested 3-day plan

  1. Day 1: Fes to Ifrane and the cedar forest of the Middle Atlas, where Barbary macaques often sit by the road. Continue through Midelt and the Ziz Valley to Merzouga.
  2. Day 2: A free day around the dunes: Gnawa music in Khamlia, a drive around Erg Chebbi, tea with a nomad family if one is camped nearby. Camel ride to camp at sunset.
  3. Day 3: Sunrise, a stop in the market town of Rissani, then back across the Middle Atlas to Fes.
Imlil village in the High Atlas Mountains

04

3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS

Marrakech, the High Atlas & Essaouira

No long drives: one city, one mountain valley and one day by the Atlantic.

This is the route we suggest when someone has three days and does not want to spend them in a car. You can sleep in Marrakech all three nights, or spend one night in a mountain guesthouse or an Essaouira riad.

Suggested 3-day plan

  1. Day 1: A guided walk through the Marrakech medina with a licensed guide: palaces, the old madrasa, the souks, and Jemaa el-Fna as it fills up at dusk.
  2. Day 2: Drive to Imlil in the High Atlas, about 75 minutes. Walk between Berber villages below Toubkal, have lunch in a village guesthouse and be back in Marrakech by evening.
  3. Day 3: Drive to Essaouira, about two and a half hours, with a stop at an argan cooperative. Walk the ramparts and the fishing port, eat grilled fish by the harbor, then head back or stay the night.

05

3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS

Fes & Chefchaouen

The old medina of Fes and the blue mountain town of Chefchaouen, for travelers flying into Fes or Tangier.

Fes needs a full day with a guide. The medina is a maze, and that is half the fun. Chefchaouen is best early in the morning before the day-trippers arrive, so we always suggest a night there.

Suggested 3-day plan

  1. Day 1: Guided day in Fes el-Bali: the Chouara tannery, the Al-Attarine madrasa, the doorway of the Al Quaraouiyine mosque and the craft souks.
  2. Day 2: Drive to Chefchaouen, three and a half to four hours. Afternoon in the blue medina and sunset from the Spanish Mosque on the hill.
  3. Day 3: A quiet morning walk before the crowds, then on to Tangier, about two and a half hours, or back to Fes for your flight.

Local tip

Add a fourth day if you can

Three days to the Sahara works, but it is tight. One more day changes the trip: you get a full day around Merzouga and the drive back is split in two. Have a look at the 4-day Sahara tour from Marrakech or the 4-day tour from Fes to Marrakech.

If three days is all you have and you want it easy, the Agafay desert is under an hour from Marrakech. It is stony desert, not sand dunes, but the camps are comfortable and the sunset over the Atlas is lovely. Our guide to Merzouga, Zagora or Agafay compares the three.

Questions

3-Day Morocco Itinerary FAQs

Still unsure which route suits you? Our local team replies quickly, usually within a few hours.

Yes, if you are happy with one night in the desert and two long days in the car. You get the camel ride, sunset, a night in camp and sunrise on the dunes. The drive back from Merzouga to Marrakech takes nine to ten hours with stops, so many travelers either add a fourth day or finish in Fes instead.

If the desert is the reason you came, go from Marrakech to Fes through the Sahara. If you would rather see more and drive less, stay around Marrakech: one day in the medina, one in the Atlas Mountains and one in Essaouira.

Easily. Marrakech with the High Atlas and Essaouira, or Fes with Chefchaouen, both keep every drive under four hours. If you only want the city, our 48 hours in Marrakech guide is a good start.

Zagora is closer to Marrakech and fits into our 2-day Zagora tour, but its dunes are small. The Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga rise to about 150 meters and are the ones most people picture. With three days, we recommend Merzouga.

Our ready-made 3-day private desert tours start from €680 per adult, as shown on each tour page. The final price depends on your dates, number of travelers, room setup and camp level. Send us your plans for a written quote. Travelers from the USA can ask for a quote in US dollars.

Yes. These are suggested routes, not shared departures. Your private trip can start and finish in Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca or Tangier, and we can change the direction and the overnight stops to suit your flights.
